Air conditioning installation Valencia: a homeowner’s guide

Choose a system that suits your rooms, your building and winter use too. Here is what to check before agreeing an installation.

Choose split, multi-split or ducted for your layout

Good air conditioning installation in Valencia starts with how you use your home. A single split system pairs an indoor unit with an outdoor unit and can suit one main room. Separate splits offer independent systems, but each outdoor unit needs a suitable, permitted position. Think about bedrooms as well as the living area, especially if you mainly need cooling at night.

A multi-split connects several indoor units to one outdoor unit. It can reduce the number of outdoor units, although available capacity must suit the rooms used together. Ducted systems distribute air through concealed ducts and grilles, usually requiring suitable ceiling space and access for maintenance. They can work well during a wider renovation. Ask how individual rooms will be controlled and what building or decorative work each option involves.

Size each room and consider winter heating

Floor area is only a starting point for sizing. Ceiling height, glazing, insulation, orientation, shading and occupancy affect the cooling load. A sunny top-floor room can behave very differently from a shaded bedroom of the same size. Ask for a room-by-room assessment rather than accepting one capacity for the whole property based on a simple rule of thumb.

An oversized unit can cycle unnecessarily and control humidity poorly; an undersized one may struggle in hot weather. Inverter systems adjust compressor output to demand, helping efficiency and comfort when correctly selected and installed. Compare seasonal cooling and heating efficiency figures rather than a single headline power rating. A reversible heat pump can also provide winter heating. Discuss expected winter use, room comfort and running costs, without assuming that every system performs identically in all conditions.

Resolve outdoor placement and building permissions

The outdoor unit needs adequate airflow, secure supports and safe access for servicing. Avoid choosing a position simply because it is out of sight. A confined balcony or poorly ventilated enclosure can affect performance, while vibration and fan noise may disturb neighbours. Pipe routes and the distance between indoor and outdoor units must also stay within the equipment’s installation limits.

For a flat, check the comunidad de propietarios rules before agreeing a façade, roof or shared-area location. Community approval may be required, and town hall or protected-building restrictions may also apply. Existing equipment elsewhere in the building is not proof that your proposed installation is permitted. Near the coast, salt air can accelerate corrosion. Discuss an appropriate unit specification, exposure, accessible positioning and cleaning guidance rather than expecting a coating to remove every maintenance need.

Plan drainage, electrical work and certified installation

Cooling produces condensate, which needs a reliable drainage route with a suitable fall where possible. Water should not simply drip onto the façade, pavement or a neighbour’s balcony. If a pump is necessary, ask about noise, access and maintenance. Reversible systems can also produce water at the outdoor unit in heating mode, so that drainage needs consideration too.

The electrical supply and protective arrangements must be checked for the proposed equipment. Refrigerant work in Spain requires an appropriately certified technician; it is not a DIY connection job. Ask who will carry it out and what installation and commissioning records you will receive. The quotation should explain pipe routes, wall penetrations, sealing, electrical work and making good. Confirm whether painting or boxing-in is included, because a working system and a finished room are not always the same scope.

  • Confirm the position of each indoor unit and avoid uncomfortable direct airflow.
  • Agree the condensate route before holes are drilled.
  • Keep service access clear for filters, connections and any drainage pump.

Compare complete quotes and plan annual servicing

A useful written quote identifies the equipment, capacities, installation scope, IVA treatment and exclusions. Ask whether brackets, pipework, drainage, electrical adjustments and removal of old equipment are included. At handover, have the controls demonstrated in cooling and heating modes, and keep the operating instructions and commissioning information. Understand the workmanship guarantee separately from the equipment warranty and follow the maintenance conditions.

Arrange annual professional servicing before summer to check operation, drainage and the condition of the system, following the manufacturer’s instructions and any applicable requirements. Clean accessible filters as instructed, especially during regular use, but leave refrigerant work and internal faults to a qualified technician. Report water leaks, unusual noise or declining performance rather than repeatedly lowering the temperature setting. Sensible shading, closed windows while cooling and a comfortable set point also help the system work efficiently.
